Dog Toy Destruction: A Dog Owner’s Search for Answers

I have a Mastiff puppy. This means a lot of things, but lately, it means that he can destroy ANY toy available to him. I regularly walk into the living room only to find what I call a “toy graveyard.” Arms, legs, stuffing, and pieces of tough fabric are strewn about, waiting to be argued over about who gets to clean them up. 🙂

I have bought all kinds of toys; stuffed animals, rubber, Kongs, Skineez, “indestructable” toys, frisbees, balls, rope, leather… you name it. He hasn’t destroyed the Kongs, but he only likes to play with those if they are filled with treats. There is currently a toy that is holding on for dear life. Embroidered on this toy is “www.mydogtoy.com” — really smart by the way. I looked this website up this morning and signed us up to be a dog toy tester. The company will send us a toy a month at a 50% discount. They had options for monthly, bi-monthly, etc. As of today, I cannot report on the success of this program, but I think it is a GREAT idea for households like mine where dog toys must withstand a round of tug-of-war between a Mastiff and a Rottweiler.

I will keep you posted, but feel free to check out the site for yourself: https://www.vipproducts.com/retail/files/index.php/store_pages/view/62/dog-toy-tester

Now you know.

Smart marketing - I would have had no clue where to buy this toy again... especially since it's the only one not completely destroyed by Kingsley these days.

I recently bought some jewelry from this artist in Costa Mesa. What I did not know was that the artist, Sarah Munsey, and I went to college together! I love my necklace and definitely recommend checking out her etsy.com site for unique accessories and gifts.

Meat Labels Lie, Your Mattress Might Not Be New, and Here’s a Coupon…

When I read Consumer Reports Magazine, I take notes. Literally. I can’t remember everything I read, so it’s no good to me unless I spend the time to take notes. Now, I realize how incredibly nerdy this is, and I have finally gotten comfortable with my inner nerd. In fact, maybe you will learn something you didn’t know… So, now you know.

Let’s start with confusing meat labels. I was pretty disgusted by this information, but I am glad I know how to differentiate between “No Antibiotics Used” and “Antibiotic Free”. Okay, pay close attention here, it’s about to to get confusing…

Meat Labels To Look For: Organic, no antibiotics used (or similar), American grass fed, Food Alliance Certified grass fed, USDA organic seal.

Confusing Labels: Natural, Antibiotic free, no antibiotic residues, no antibiotic growth promotants.

The FDA does not recognize Antibiotic free. It does not mean that the animal didn’t have antibiotics for an illness, it means the antibiotics weren’t used to promote growth. In order to get meat without antibiotics – the label must specifically say “no antibiotics used.”

For more information go to www.meatwithoutdrug.org or http://www.womenshealthmag.com/nutrition/meat-labels.

COUPONS: Check out coupons for groceries at:  Coupons.Walmart.com, CouponBlender.com, Shortcuts.com, TheGroceryGame.com, and check Dollar Store Web Deals. The Dollar Store has been reevaluated by Consumer Reports and received a seal of approval as a viable option for grocery shopping at low prices.

Grocery Apps: Grocery IQ, CardStar, Grocery Smarts, Pushpins,

Mattresses: Make sure the tag on your mattress says “All new material”. Many mattresses are unwashed and the material recycled. Consumer Reports suggests you NOT buy a mattress unless it has this tag. Here are tips from the FTC on how to go about buying a mattress:

Mattress Shopping Tips:

  • Shop around. Mattress prices and quality vary greatly.
  • Ask if the retailer sells used bedding. If so, and you want a new mattress, make sure your mattress has a “new” mattress tag.
  • Make sure you look at the tag on the actual mattress you’re buying, either before you leave the store or before the delivery person leaves your house. Don’t let the heavy plastic wrapping stop you from looking for — and at — the tag.
  • Ask the retailer to write “new” on your sales receipt if you’ve been told you’re buying a new mattress. If it turns out that the mattress is used, you’ll have stronger recourse.
  • Avoid retailers with mattresses that don’t carry tags. You simply don’t know what you’re getting, regardless of what the salesperson claims. It’s what’s in writing that counts.
  • Ask about the retailer’s return and refund policies, and get copies in writing.
